Working With, Not Against, Elders with Dementia Using Jiu Jitsu

May 26, 2016

Jiu Jitsu loosely translated is using gentle, flexible, or yielding techniques instead of weapons in combative or difficult situations. When dealing with aging elders’ difficult behaviors, we will support these types of techniques in place of antipsychotic medications.

This presentation will explore the sources of difficulties providing a peaceful, quality of life for our aging elders, both at home and in aging services communities. The principles presented will enable staff to reduce antipsychotic medications while providing care.

One of the guiding principles is learning to see and honor their reality. Also, helping them overcome decades of programming by our culture to "go quietly into the night" will be discussed; instead helping them rediscover a sense of purpose and meaning through helping others at whatever level they can.
